Of the Times
Hi, friends! It has been a wild few weeks with lots of hiking and wine drinking and not much time at my computer (i.e. a very relaxing few weeks).
News
A year in the making, At the Precipice, opened last month at the Design Museum of Chicago. It’s a beautiful and tragic look at the climate crisis, and I’m so glad the exhibition is finally out in the world. If you’re in Chicago, we have a few pieces of programming scheduled during the next few weeks:
August 30: A virtual artist talk about art and climate justice.
September 16: A volunteer session at Happy Returns Studio.
September 21: A screening of Tasha van Zandt’s After Antarctica (2021) downtown at Gene Siskel.
I also spoke with Chris Pappan, whose striking triptych is part of the exhibition. We talked about stereotypes, his upbringing, and his new Chicago venture for Native art.
At the Precipice is up through October 30. Please go see it!
I was thrilled to contribute to the exhibition catalog for Sho Shibuya’s Month on view at Unit London. Last summer, I spoke with Sho about his love of ritual, which shines through in this show. This new essay addresses time, orientation, and the inevitability of change.
And if you missed it, I also was asked to write about Nicole McLaughlin’s cheeky Carhartt works a few months back. My Midwestern roots came in use.
The rest
The aforementioned hiking—ten days on the (grueling! stunning!) Tour du Mont Blanc— and a water break while crossing the border from France to Italy.
